Fine Art Catalog Photography - Fernando Zóbel de Ayala Paintings

The family of famed Filipino painter Fernando Zóbel de Ayala recently commissioned me to capturethe front and back of two of his study paintings that they had in their private collection; the images of these pieces would be used in an catalog chronicling the artist’s life works.

Photographing artwork is always a unique challenge due to the natural lens curvature/distortion that occurs (ie: concave or convex lines where they should be perfectly straight). Other important aspects are color accuracy, and using a small aperture to ensure that focus is scattered all over the entire image. Most of the straightening magic is done in post with ‘upright transformations’ in Lightroom, and occasionally ‘warping’ in Photoshop.

All images in this blog post were shot on a Nikon D750, using an AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G series lens, and individually post-processed in Adobe Lightroom using my own custom presets.
